Sinkholes usually occur where the rock below the land surface is limestone,
Sinkholes can be naturally occurring, as described above. They can also
be created or made larger by man. Unfortunately, many modern day activities
have accelerated the formation of sinkholes in Florida.
Common practices
such as dredging, redirecting surface water, creating reservoirs, and pumping
groundwater have accelerated sinkhole activity in Florida, sometimes resulting
in the abrupt formation of collapse-type sinkholes.
